"Visual Jazz," that's how collectors refer to Mihoko M's paintings. Translating the movement, tonality, and rhythm of jazz with paint is what inspires the work. With her great ear for color, Mihoko shows us what modern jazz music looks like. Each painting is titled after the music that inspired it.
Mihoko (Me Ho Ko) Maier paints with acrylic and oils on canvas and board. When she paints on board, she carves the lines using the same tools that woodblock Ukioye artists use to carve their work. The weight of the lines creates movement and has an evocative musical presence. Her paintings have layer after layer of paint. She works etching and scrubbing through the layers to create subtle textured passages with charming tonalities. It's purely improvisational and very physical.
Mihoko was formally trained at the prestigious women's art school in Japan, Joshibi. She is a classically trained landscape and portrait painter but found her voice with her abstract Visual Jazz work. A good abstract painting will have flow and balance even if you turn it sideways, or upside down.
Mihoko was born in Tokyo Japan in 1952 and was considered an art prodigy in grade school.
Her rigorous traditional training in composition ensures that her work satisfies critics and art lovers alike.
Mihoko's work does not give up all of its secrets with just a single look. Windsor Fine Art in New Orleans, a jazz mecca, is the ideal venue to show her love of jazz and painting.
